LAN71 Powder Metal PM-T15 HSS Mitre Cutters. The question of what rpm range is suitable for tube mitreing has come up several times. The answer has several parts - machine rigidity, flood coolant or not, proper feed rate, cutter diameter, tube material hardness, tube gauge, etc., are some of the factors. One place to start to determine a good rpm is to use a surface feet per minute table for drilling - this seems to be conservative even though the chip flow created by a drill bit is not the same as that from a tube mitre cutter. To simplify, let's assume a small mill is used without flood coolant, hand feeding, 1-1/8" (28.6mm.) cutter, 4130 material with a Brinell hardness of 179 and a 0.9mm. wall thickness. Published tables of surface feet per minute (SFM equals the cutter circumference times RPM) for drill bits show a range from 60 to 90 feet/min for material with a Brinell hardness under 200 which 4130 satisfies. RPM equals 3.814 times the SFM divided by the cutter diameter in inches, which for a 1-1/8" cutter gives a range from 200 to 300 rpm. If the material is heat treated and has a Rockwell (RC) hardness number between 35 and 40, the resulting rpm drops to between 100 to 135 rpm. With a little trial a good speed with the parameters unique to the condition will be found.

Terra Nova Cycles, LLC (TNC) warrants to the original purchaser of LAN71 tube mitre cutters that they shall be free from defects in material and workmanship. Please note that like all high speed steel cutting tools the LAN71 tube mitre cutters are brittle by nature. Because of this fact and because the conditions of use cannot be studied by TNC, no refund will be made for broken cutters. TNC's obligation under this warranty is limited to furnishing without additional charge a replacement or, at its option, repairing or issuing credit for any cutter which shall within one year from the date of sale be returned freight prepaid together with a copy of the original invoice to TNC's workshop and which upon inspection is determined by TNC to be defective in materials and workmanship. Complete information as to operating conditions, machine setup, and application of cutting fluid should accompany any product returned for inspection. The provisions of this warranty shall not apply to any LAN71 mitre cutter which has been subject to misuse, improper operating conditions, machine setup or application of cutting fluid or which has been repaired or altered. The cutters are not guaranteed against tooth breakage, but broken teeth, in many instances, can be repaired at cost by sending the cutter directly to McKenzie Tool Grinding Service, 5040 N.E. 112th. Ave. Portland, OR 97220. MTG telephone no.: 503-255-5784; fax 503-253-4076. www.mckenzietool.com.

Arbors for the back threaded mitre cutters - R8 on the left and 3/4" straight shank on the right. Both are threaded 7/8"-20tpi. (standard boring head thread) to match the back thread in the mitre cutters. Please note that the Paragon arbors for hole saws do not have compatible threading. Arbors are priced at $37.85 for either the straight shank or the R8. Note that the cutters easily thread on and off using a "C" spanner (not provided) thus requiring one arbor for all the different cutter sizes. To order, please contact Andy. PayPal and good check accepted.

Today LAN71 tube mitre cutters (photo) are manufactured from PM T-15 powder metallurgy high speed steel supplied by the world's finest steel mills. Typical chemical composition is 1.6% carbon, 4% chromium, 12.25% tungsten 4.9% vanadium and 5% cobalt and typical hardness is Rockwell C 66. A high volume of hard vanadium carbides provides very high wear resistance. The cobalt content provides excellent cutting edge strength at high service temperatures which is known as "red hardness". Through the 1970's up until the late 1990's, LAN71 cutters were ground from M2 HSS. Beginning around 2007 M42 high cobalt material was used and then in 2009 we switched to PM T-15 powder/particle metallurgy. Powder metallurgy involves compacting millions of fine particles of steel which are even in size and uniform in carbide distribution into a bar of tool steel. For the finest tube mitre cutters available today, all LAN71 cutters are turned and ground from PM T-15 for its superior wear resistance, red hardness, toughness and grindability. While the cost of particle metal PM T-15 is greater than M2 and M42 cobalt high speed steel, the enhanced metallurgical characteristics greatly aid in machining the modern air hardening heat treated steel bicycle tubing.
