Rear triangle brazing of Donald's frame. This photo shows the seatstay to dropout brazing. Entire frame is held in the Marchetti fixture. Once the seatstays and dropouts are fluxed, the joints are heated and Harris brass rod is face fed carefully to avoid over filling the Llewellyn road dropouts.

Photo of Donald's frame after completing rear triangle brazing. Marchetti fixture clamps the rear triangle ensuring proper alignment. Fixture is rotated so that the seatstays are vertical for brazing to the dropouts and then rotated so that the seat tube is horizontal to aid silver brazing flow at the seat lug/top stay binder joint.

Reaming, chamfering, facing the head tube of cousin Donald's frame with the SILVA head tube mill. For the record, it is after work hours on Saturday and the Monks Gate wine is the ticket for this sort of work.

First test of the brazed carbide tube mitre cutter. Smooth as a baby's bottom. Hand fed at 325 rpm, cut time 11 seconds, painted-on Blasocut 4000 Strong coolant mitreing Reynolds 631 air hardening steel. Will test cutter on Reynolds 921 stainless and 853 heat treated steel tomorrow and some titanium asap. As soon as some scrap pieces of Reynolds stainless 953 are to hand this cutter will have a go.

First test of the brazed carbide tube mitre cutter on Reynolds 953 stainless steel heat treated cycle frame tubing no. SS4000 (28.6x0.5/0.3/0.5) with HRC52. (Carbide hardness is in the range of 90-91 HRC. High tooth count diamond wheel ground by Gary McKenzie and the cutter body is 4140 steel turned in the Strawberry workshop by Andy.) Cut was indistinguishable from the cut of the 631 air hardening non heat treated steel tube. Hand fed at 325 rpm, cut time 11 seconds, painted-on Blasocut 4000 Strong coolant employed on my trusty 1957 model Bridgeport milling machine. Good news indeed.

Donald's frame is now mounted on the Bridgeport milling machine to drill the Di2 wire hole in the down tube. Tube mitre blocks held in the Kurt milling machine vise are used to clamp the down tube. The tube is rotated and the 6mm drill bit is aligned to perform the drilling. Better to err on the safe side than to hand drill.

Brazed carbide mitre cutter 4140 steel bodies being sawn on the Pedrazzoli SN255 bandsaw. First step in the production of the brazed carbide mitre cutters. Next over to the lathe and then to the brazing bench to silver the carbide rings to the bodies.

Previously the seat tube and chainstays of the next frame were tacked into the bottom bracket shell then removed from the fixture and completely brazed from the inside of the shell. Now the frame returns to the fixture and the top tube, which has been mitred on both ends, is positioned.

Photo of top tube/seat tube joint of a customer's frame. This perfectly mitred joint is the first to be done with the new brazed carbide mitre cutter turned out in the Strawberry workshop and precision ground by McKenzie Tool Grinding Service here in Portland. A precisely mitred joint calls for a precision mitre cutter. No hole saws used in the Strawberry workshop!
